In 2017 it was suggested to our founder, Peggy Bowditch, that she start a local daffodil society to help preserve Daffodils in our area. She held the first meeting with 30 participants at her home in September 2018. Our club now holds regular meeting four times a year plus additional workshops and garden tours.
The Gloucester Daffodil Club is growing. Our members include men, women and youth from Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex, Northern Neck and Williamsburg. We even have a few supporting members from outside of Virginia. Contact us for more information on attending a meeting and/or joining our club.
Our mission is to plant and encourage plantings of daffodils throughout Gloucester County. We teach members how to show and grow daffodils and support the Gloucester Daffodil Festival and Gloucester Daffodil Show. We also support the American Daffodil Judges School when held in Gloucester. We are affiliated with the American Daffodil Society and Virginia Daffodil Society.
Early English settlers brought Daffodils to Gloucester when it was formed in 1651. With ideal weather and soil conditions, daffodils were plentiful and by the 20th century, they were growing wild throughout the county. Click Here to read more about the history of Daffodils in Gloucester.
